What makes a prompt work

A prompt answer isn't a caption, it's an opening. The test is simple: could a stranger reply to this in under ten seconds without feeling awkward? If your answer is a closed statement — a single word, an in-joke, a flex — there's nothing to grab. If it names something specific, half the reply writes itself.

Specificity is the whole game. "I love travelling" gives someone nothing. "I'm trying to find the best cinnamon bun in the city and I'm four bakeries in" gives them a question, an opinion, and a date idea in one line.

The three-prompt balance

You get three prompts. Use one for humour or personality, one for lifestyle or values, and one that sets up a concrete date or shared interest. Three jokes reads as deflection. Three sincere answers reads as heavy. The mix is what makes a profile feel like a person.

Prompts that reliably work

• "Together, we could…": describe an actual low-pressure date. "Argue about the best pub roast in a five-mile radius until we've settled it properly" beats "travel the world" because it's doable next Saturday.
• "A random fact I love…": pick something genuinely niche you enjoy explaining. Curiosity is attractive and the answer is an easy thing to reply to.
• "The hallmark of a good relationship is…": name one habit or value you actually live by. It signals maturity without turning the profile into a manifesto.
• "I go crazy for…": works when the answer is small and specific — a food, a sound, a very particular kind of weather — rather than a category.
• "Two truths and a lie": reliable because it demands a reply: people can't help guessing. Keep all three plausible or the game's over instantly.

What to avoid

• Cynicism about dating apps: "I can't believe I'm on here" tells people you don't want to be talking to them.
• Rules and filters: "Don't waste my time", "swipe left if…" — these describe what you're against instead of what you're like.
• One-word answers: they read as low effort even when you're just being concise.
• Pure flex: job title, salary, gym numbers. Nothing to reply to except agreement.

The pattern across all four: they close the conversation instead of opening it. Before you save a prompt, read it back and ask what someone would actually type in response. If you can't think of anything, neither can they.
